Our new man Ian Oxlade has discovered Peter Pan was conceived in the Meadows.
A friend told me that Peter Pan was conceived in Nottingham. It is true that J.M. Barrie, his creator, lived in Nottingham and worked for the Nottingham journal. Long before our imaginations were pricked by the sight of children flying over buildings in London and mermaids in Neverland, the author, apparently, imagined children flying over what would have been Castle Meadows while he was sat in The Park.
It is a fanciful notion but one that I fancy. I bring it up as an example and a request. If Barrie had left the flying children in his mind and on his grin as opposed to transforming them into words on a page, the World would have had to get by without Peter Pan. And that doesn’t sound like much fun. Maybe you don’t have crocodiles and pirates in your head but you may have something else and if you do, The Broadsheet could well be the platform for your ideas and words.
The Broadsheet will be as strong as the people that contribute to it. The editorial team delights in receiving submissions because we know what we could achieve with this online cultural magazine. We aim to create a rolling resource that reflects and promotes the creative diversity and significance of Nottingham, both nationally and internationally. We find ourselves at the centre of the country and blessed with a blossoming creative scene.
We are not interested, however, in simply operating as a collection of reviews and previews of Nottingham based work. The Broadsheet will become known for its focus on language. We want our contributors to write in a way that reflects the very creativity that they celebrate. This is no stuffy publication. Don’t stand on ceremony. Play with your words and ideas. Alongside articles, there will be audio and visual treats for you to enjoy. The editorial team will remain visible and approachable through meetings, debates and events to ensure that The Broadsheet is a relevant, driving force for Nottingham.
